4.7 Human Brain - Medical
 

The brain is encased in the bony scull and floats in a pool of cerebrospinal fluid, which protects the brain from shock waves. The brain is divided in several regions, each with their own important functions.

The brain monitors and regulates many unconscious bodily processes, as well as being the site of conscious and intellectual memory and emotions. The brain weighs about 1,3kg and contains over 100 billion nerve cells and millions of supporting sells.

Although the brain accounts for only 2% of a personís body weight, it requires 20% of the bodyís blood.

Humans have most complex brain of all animals. It gives humans the power for original thought, and communication through speech and writing.[37], [38]
 
 

4.7.1 Background

Data was retrieved from the General Electric MRI scanner at Hydromed Hospital, Bloemfontein. The 2D CAT scanned images imported by using the GE ADVANTAGE program. The Materialise Mimics software was used during this phase. The cerebellum was separated from the rest by using a mask,
A 3d representation of the cerebellum was made as it was the field of interest.
 
 

4.7.2 Conclusion
 

The image format was a bit different (512x448) than the normal 512x512 or 256x256.

The data was easily converted. Future studies to combine CAT and MRI data registration are of interest to Universitas Academic Hospital.

Finer slices would be required to obtain better results.
