In order to facilitate Change we need to be able to relate to people and their behaviours.  To summarize most of the Change behaviours, we consider the following 4 characters (aligned with the Diffusion of Innovation):

  1. The Visionary (an Innovator)

The Visionary, is gifted to sense future Change opportunities.  He has the vision and is good at giving direction.  This person moves quickly with Change; he actually instinctively anticipates Change.  They have the ability to predict and learn from others, also by trail and error.  They also continuously monitor situations to detect Change.  They like to keep things simple, accept Change and easily move on in life.

  1. The Opportunist (an Early Adopter)

The opportunist is a "go-getter" and also does not waste time.  The Visionary & Opportunist work very well together. The moment the Visionary sensed the opportunity and gave the direction, the Opportunist is the one who makes it work, the one who would go out into the unknown and find the new opportunity, like a needle in a haystack.  Like the Visionary, the Opportunist moves quickly with Change, he actually anticipates Change.  He has the ability to predict and learn from others, also by trail and error.  He also continuously monitors situations to detect Change and likes to keep things simple.

  1. The Pessimist (the Laggard)

A more sophisticated person with complex analytical thoughts.  Although confident, this person has particular believes, fears.  The emotion expressed when Change occurs would be complaining, yelling, expressing negative thoughts, showing irritation, disbelieve, denial,  having a feeling of being cheated .  The thinking type that greatly resist change by being very passive and un-cooperative.  The Pessimist likes to plan, and reason.  The Pessimist does not move out of his normal framework or state of mind.   Normally, Change passes by the Pessimist without him even noticing.  This person builds his social life, status and well being around his achievements and wealth.  Likes to show-off and being arrogant and entitled about being in a deserved comfort zone.  The Pessimist is normally being paralyzed by his own fears, stagnant to Change.  It is seldom that the Pessimist would reach the "Insight" phase, 1 of 5 Phases of Change.  The only thing he would want to Change would be to change things back the way it was.

  1. The Follower (the Majority)

Also, a more confident, sophisticated person with complex analytical thoughts believes and fears.  The initial emotion expressed when Change occurs would be shock and immobility.  The thinking and reasoning type who needs to see and understand Change before he can deal with it.  They would, carefully, move out of their normal framework or state of mind, once convinced that Change is unavoidable.   Also, Change passes by the Follower without him even noticing.  Like the Pessimist, this person builds his social life, status and well being around his achievements and wealth and likes to show-off, being arrogant and entitled about being in a well deserved comfort zone.  The Follower would reach the "Insight" phase, 1 of 5 Phases of Change, normally once he realizes that others must have already changed and that it must be OK to Change, thinking "if they can do it so can I".  The Follower has the ability to reflect and later laugh at himself being so reluctant to Change and by being haltered by his own over exaggerated fears.  He has the ability to learn from others and from the past, keep records and seek improvement.

We also consider the ability to Change, as the ability to adapt, being resilient.  The graph shows 5 types of people and how they would typically react to Innovation over the lifespan of a product, also applicable to Change:

  1. The Innovator is like the Visionary
  2. The Early Adopter is like the Opportunist
  3. The Early and Late Majority are like the Follower
  4. The Laggard is like the Pessimist
